The remote town of Tsuwano is surrounded by hills in the Kanoashi District of Shimane prefecture. The town is famous for the thousands of koi carp which live in the canals of the Tonomachi part of the town; here along the main streets you can also find many old samurai houses, sake breweries, museums, and shops.
The town and its castle were founded in 1325 and the castle remained until the Meiji era, now all that remains is its stone base. From the castle ruins great views can be had over the surrounding countryside and down on the town below.
A great way to explore the area is to rent a bicycle which allows you to follow a quiet lane along the river or head up into the upper parts of the town with its scenic views of the valley.
The town is also host to many festivals throughout the year.
