Made famous in Homer’s epic descriptions of the Trojan War Troy has as a result of excavations over the last hundred years turned from a city of myth to one of fact. The truth of the wars may never be known but the site continues to enthral visitors nonetheless.
Homer was thought to be composing his epic verses sometime in the 9th century BC, a time at which the events he was supposedly describing were already ancient, having taken place many centuries before.
Mythology relates the story Achilles and the Greeks’ struggle against the Trojans and how, through the use of a giant horse, they gained entry to and victory over Troy. Thought to be legend, excavations by the Heinrich Schliemann in the 1870s revealed layer upon layer of ancient remains, and spectacularly, a hoard of gold, bronze and silver which he names ‘Priam’s Treasure’ after the King of Troy.
It seems the legend may have had a basis in fact. Today’s visitors to the site follow a circular trail that helps illustrate the history of the site. A must see for anyone who has read Homer’s work.
