The medieval town of Trogir was founded by the Greeks in the 3rd century B.C. before being occupied by the Romans. The medieval town stands on the layout of the original Roman city and is surrounded by walls in which lie a castle, tower and palaces from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
The historic centre of Trogir is located on an island which forms part of Kastela Bay, between the mainland and the island of Ciovo. The superb architecture and stonework of the historical old town has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Its network of narrow streets and picturesque harbour waterfront are a great place to explore and admire the fantastic buildings.
Attractions in Trogir
The most impressive building in the city is the church of St. Lawrence, its Romanesque-Gothic style architecture being some of the best in the country. Other notable attractions include Kamerlengo Castle and St. Mark's Tower and impressive Renaissance and Baroque buildings from the Venetian period.
