Trinidad, located in central Cuba, is a city of cobblestone streets, pastel coloured houses, majestic palaces and plazas which have given the city UNESCO World Heritage status. As well as fantastic architecture the city has a selection of museums, one of the most interesting being the Municipal Museum which tells the history of the region. The city is compact enough to be toured in a few hours, either by foot or by horse-drawn carriage, but as there is so much more to do in the surrounding area it is worth staying for longer.
Close to both the El Escambray mountains and the coast, the city combines history, architecture, adventure and the beach. The nearby Valley of the Sugar Mills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has around 70 long-standing sugar mills, which remind travellers of the importance of sugar to the Cuban economy over the centuries. It is possible to tour the valley on horseback.
For those interested in water-sports, Casilda Bay, known for its clear water is an ideal spot for snorkelling and diving, Ancon Beach boasts a beautiful white sandy beach whilst Cayo Blanco offers superb dive sites to see corals and tropical fish.
