The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the classic alpine routes and one of the world’s most famed walks. A series of footpaths creates a circuit of 180km around the highest mountain in Western Europe - Mont Blanc (4,808m) - and many of its satellite peaks, passing through France, Switzerland and Italy, all of which share the Mont Blanc Massif between them. The route traditionally starts at Les Houches in the Chamonix valley and passes through the towns and villages of Les Contamines, Les Chapieux, Courmayeur and Champex.

The archetypal Haute Route is a glacier trek which closely follows the original ski traverse of the Western Alps from Chamonix to Zermatt. The route encompasses high rugged passes, fantastic views of the Matterhorn and lush alpine valleys and meadows, whose flowers are in bloom during spring and early summer.

The Alpine Pass is another of the Alps’ classic walks, its route extending east-west from the Liechtenstein border to Lake Geneva. The route encompasses a series of superbly scenic passes, almost all well above 2000m, and a succession of magnificent peaks such as the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau.

Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the range and dominates the view from wherever you are on the Tour du Mont Blanc. Whichever trek you decide to do there are other magnificent peaks to see such as the famous Chamonix Needles, the Matterhorn and the Eiger. In addition to the stunning mountain scenery you can also savour the food and wines of the region in a variety of traditional alpine inns.

Activities in Tour du Mont Blanc and Other Great Treks

The Tour du Mont Blanc usually takes 11 days to complete, give or take a day or two and involves generally moderate hiking through delightful alpine villages and picturesque valleys, staying the night in traditional alpine inns or hotels. The walk is usually undertaken between the months of June and September and although demanding in parts, is well within the capabilities of any fit mountain walker.

There are however countless other walks that can be enjoyed by walkers of all experiences, from day rambles enjoying the scenery and alpine meadows, right through to more difficult and challenging outings where experience is essential. A guide will add greatly to your enjoyment and safety and can be arranged by local Travel Experts.

Relaxing

Time in the mountains is tiring but rewarding. A good meal in a local restaurant after a days walking is usually enough to ensure a good night’s sleep.

Getting Around

From Geneva Airport, you can take a direct bus to Chamonix, then another bus along the valley to Les Houches. Les Houches also has a station on the narrow-gauge railway that links with the main SNCF network at Le Fayet. Alternatively if you book a tour with a local Travel Expert it is likely that your transport will be included, removing the need to make your own arrangements.
