Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy, and is one of the smallest and most pleasant capital cities in the world. Its name means Thor's Harbour, named after the god of thunder and lightning in Norse mythology.
Tórshavn blends the historical and picturesque with all the features of a modern city. Tórshavn is located in the centre of the country, from where travellers can reach almost every corner of the island archipelago.
The city history dates back to the Viking era, when they established their parliament on the Tingenes peninsula in 825 AD. The built-up area in Tórshavn was not mentioned until after the Protestant reformation in 1539. Early on, the town became the centre of the monopoly trade, therefore being the only legal place for the islanders to sell and buy goods.
In 1856, the trade monopoly was abolished and the islands were left open to free trade. The town has grown rapidly ever since the turn of the 20th century into the undisputed administrative, economic and cultural centre of the Faroes.
