Arguably Istanbul’s premier attraction and home to the Topkapi Dagger and Spoonmaker Diamond, Topkapi Palace Museum reveals to the visitor the wealth and importance of the Ottoman sultans who ruled the lands from Turkey to Algeria for over 600 years. As the main residence of the government for 400 years its importance is today evident from the riches housed within its walls. Don’t miss the Treasury and famous Harem.
Until the royal court moved to Dolmabahçe Palace in 1853 Topkapi was the seat of government for the powerful and unforgiving sultans of the Ottoman Empire. Ruling from here as they did for 400 years the palace was a centre for civil and military planning, intrigue and lavish living. Building commenced in 1459 on the orders of Sultan Mohammed II and gradually a series of four courtyards evolved, along with the Harem and a complex of private apartments.
Make first for the Harem where an English-language tour will reveal stories of intrigue set amongst its 400 rooms. The Imperial Treasury is today in rooms that were originally used by Mehmet II and hold two of the world’s best-known treasures – the Topkapi Dagger, a bejewelled knife literally encrusted with fabulous jewels, and the Spoonmaker Diamond, the world’s fifth biggest at 86 carats. There are solid gold candlesticks, beautiful miniature paintings and religious relics that go together to create this important collection of must-see treasures.
