The entrance of Todra Gorge is a real spectacle! Imagine two monumental rock walls over 300 metres high offering a palette of reds that varies depending on the time and colour of the sky? These are the most striking cliffs in southern Morocco and any traveller passing through the area should at least catch a glimpse of this natural highlight, particularly those that like to trek.
Take a 4WD excursion through Todra Gorge and explore the villages of Tamtatoucht and Ait Hani, or do a full circuit and return through Dades Gorge and Boumaine. A couple of hotels are situated at the foot of the gorge.
Todra Gorge was formed as a result of an enormous fault in the plateau which separates the High Atlas from the Jebel Saghro. The crystal-clear waters of Wadi Todra flows through the gorge, feeding the vast Tinerhir palm grove further on. Mornings are the best time of day to view the gorge when the rays of the sun provide much needed illumination.
Activities in Todra Gorge
Several interesting walks are possible from the hotels at the base of the gorge including a walk to a local viewpoint named "Abdelali" for excellent views of the Jebel Saghro and Dades Valley (takes approx. 4 hours hotel back to hotel, local guide essential).
Relaxing
Take time to relax and enjoy a pot of mint tea at the terrace restaurant of Hotel Yasmina in the heart of the gorge.
Getting Around
The route into Todra Gorge starts from Tinerhir, 170 km northeast of Ouarzazate. Private transport is highly recommended for the drive.
