The origin of the name Todi is disputed – it could come from the Etruscan "tudicolare", or from "tutus" - "a fortified place". Whatever its origins this is an ancient town, founded some 2700 years BC.
It has seen Etruscan and then Roman domination, remains of which can still be seen, such as the Nicchioni Romani, on Piazza Mercato Vecchio. Destroyed during the fall of the Roman Empire Bishop Fortunato later became the towns patron saint before in the 12th century Todi became free commune and enjoyed a period of prosperity.
From this time monuments such as the Captain Palace, il Priori Palace and the remarkable St. Fortunato Church were built.
The town also thrive during Renaissance times and the Santa Maria della Consolazione dates from then.
