The Lycian Way is Turkey’s first long-distance way-marked walking path. It links the village of Ovacık in the west with Antalya in the east, passing through some of Turkey’s most spectacular coastal scenery. Highlights are spring flowers, friendly villagers, stunning views, ancient sites along with some great coastal towns.

The route, whilst way-marked, is best suited to more experienced walkers who are happy trekking in remote mountain areas. Some sections can be quite steep and the ground is often rough underfoot. Most walkers tend to get a group of friends together and make arrangements from home by contacting local suppliers who are able to book accommodation and provide transport before setting off; in this way it becomes very cost effective. Others choose to use towns such as Fethiye, Kalkan and Kaş as their base and make sorties from there, returning to a comfortable hotel each evening. Yet others embark on the whole length of the walk and camp or stay in village house as they go! Whichever way you choose to walk the route you can be assured of fantastic hiking and a friendly welcome.

Attractions in The Lycian Way

Attractions along the way (if not always on the trail) include the ghost-town of Kayaköy, the ancient sites of Xanthos and Letoon, the pretty harbour towns of Kalkan and Kaş, wonderful Ucağiz and nearby Kale. The sunken ruins at Kekova which can be explored by sea-kayak are opposite, and then, further east, to Olympos where the legendary fire-breathing Chimaera can be found, the beaches at Phaselis and finally the old harbour-town at Antalya. For many their most memorable moments will be the meetings with locals along the way where genuine warmth, generosity and hospitality is very much the norm.

Relaxing

Relax with a beer at the end of a long day's walk in one of the harbour-side cafes of Kalkan or Kaş.
