The 3 Gorges Dam project, completed in summer 2006, has not failed to diminish the splendour or impact of the 3 Gorges themselves, instead adding an extra dimension to a cruise on the Yangtse River. The Yangtse River, the biggest river in China and the third longest in the world, starts high on the Tibet Plateau and here in Sichuan and Hubei is undoubtedly a cradle of Chinese civilisation.
From Chongqing, where most Yangtse cruises start, it heads east through the uniquely beautiful Qutang, Wu and Xiling Gorges. These steep sided and beautiful cliffs are marvellous creations of nature and hold within them several places of interest, all the while along the banks of the Yangtse the high peaks, overhanging rocks and rapids all come together to add atmosphere.
Qutang Gorges is also called Kui Gorge and extends from the White King Shrine in the west to the town of Daixizhen in the east. The total length of the gorge is around 8km. Attractions include White King Shrine, Mengliang Staircase, the Kui Gate, the Bellows Gorge and Rhinoceros Watching the Moon.
Wu Gorge begins at the mouth of the Daling River and ends at Guandukou in Badong County in the east, a total length of 44km. There are twelve wonderful peaks along with the Kongming Tablet and Wuduo Bridge.
Xiling Gorge runs from the Fragrant Stream to the Nanjing Pass in Yichang county in the east, and is the longest of all at 76km. Notorious in the past for its turbulent currents the construction of the 3 Gorges Dam has eased this. Scenic spots along the gorge include the Military Book and Precious Sword, the Ox Liver and Horse Lung, Huangling Temple, and the Shadow Play Gorge.
The 3 Gorges Dam project has always been controversial and a visit to it allows you to make up your mind whether this was a necessary contribution towards China’s modern infrastructure, or not.
