The High Andes that run like a backbone down the length of Ecuador drop sharply from thousands of metres above sea level to the mere hundreds, where they reach Tena, Puyo and the Rio Napo in the Upper Amazon Basin.
As the mountains plunge from their glacial heights, rivers and streams cascade and temperatures rise, generating a vast variety of microclimates and ecosystems in a relatively small area. As such, the region is rich in wildlife, birds, tropical plants and trees.
The small towns of Puyo and Tena survive on the fringes of the Amazon Rainforest and are important commercial centres for the communities who live in the region.
The smaller settlements of Puerto Napo and Misahualli are also worth a visit, particularly for those hoping to venture deeper into the jungle.
