The small coastal town of Tela is becoming a popular beach destination. Only a short distance from San Pedro Sula's international airport and with Caribbean beaches as good as you can get, it is little wonder. But Tela is more diverse in its natural beauty – it also offers visitors a huge diversity of habitats and accompanying flora and fauna at the Lancetilla Gardens, Punta Sal National Park and Punta Izopo Wildlife Refuge. Moreover, it is the heartland of Honduras’ Garifuna community.

Tela was once the heart of Honduras's booming banana trade, home to the headquarters of Tela Railroad Company, owners of the Chiquita banana brand. Although they have since moved close to San Pedro Sula, the Tela Railroad Company has left its mark on the town.

The area is fascinating from an anthropological point of view, with the Garifuna Museum in Tela and various Garifuna villages located nearby, including the spectacularly-located Miami. There is a huge biodiversity on offer, naturally, at Punta Sal and Punta Izopo National Parks and, man-made (or rather man-enhanced!), at Lancetilla Botanical Garden.
