The city of Takamatsu, facing the Seto Inland Sea, is situated in northern Kagawa on the island of Shikoku. It is the main gateway to the island, a bustling ferry port and centre of administration, economy and culture for Shikoku.
Now a modern city, Takamatsu was once a thriving castle town during the 17th century, ruled by the Matsudaira Family. Takamastu Castle has since disappeared and now Tamamo-koen Park stands in its place. Honen-ji Temple, was once the family temple of the lord of Takamatsu.
Located in the Bisan-Seto area is Yashima, a 293m high lava plateau that juts out into the Seto Inland Sea. The view from the top is fantastic with a beautiful scenic view of the islands and the Seto Inland Sea. Also at the top is Yashima-ji Temple which is said to have been built by the great Chinese priest Ganjin in 754. Inside is a display of 12th century pictures.
Shiono-onsen-kyo Hot Spring Village, dates back some 1,300 years and features traditional inns with a restful atmosphere.
