Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales, a vibrant city built around Sydney Harbour, as well as being a major international tourist destination it is Australia’s largest financial and economic centre.

One of the highlights of any visit to Sydney is a view of the Sydney Opera House - one of the great architectural achievements of the 20th century - rewarded with a place on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2007.

The city is the site of the first European settlement in Australia, established in 1788 at Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip, leader of the First Fleet from Britain. The city has now become one of the most multicultural cities in the world.

Sydney Harbour islandsFort Denison and Shark, Clark, Rodd and Goat islands – have cultural and historical significance. Some of the sites resonate with Aboriginal history, while others reflect a European past with convict-built structures and old forts.

Attractions in Sydney

There’s no doubt Sydney is a thrilling, action-packed destination with a new discovery at every turn, full of excellent attractions including the famous Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. ‘The Rocks’ bursting with a colourful history dating back to convict days, a maze of sandstone lanes, cul-de-sacs and courtyards, jam-packed with shops, warehouses and terraces that were built in the early 19th century, once home to Sydney’s dockworkers and stevedores, and now a magnet for international visitors, who flock to its many shops, boutiques, pubs and restaurants.

Activities in Sydney

The choice is endless, take a cruise or ferry across the harbour, visit one of the nearby excellent beaches, climb the harbour bridge, stroll around the foreshore. Visit Darling Harbour, a lively waterfront precinct busy day and night with alfresco cafes and bars. Sydney’s arts and cultural scene is always dynamic.

Relaxing

The dining scene is a moveable feast of fashions with new restaurants sending the food critics scrambling for fresh adjectives. Tasting menus are hot right now and some of the dining focus has shifted to the back end of the meal with chefs discovering what every inner child knows - you can’t beat a really great dessert. Nightlife in Sydney is excellent.

Getting Around

Think of greater Sydney being situated in concentric rings, with the highest concentration of transport services in the inner Sydney, but with fast and efficient train and bus services to outer Sydney and beyond. A ‘Sydney Pass’ is available for 3, 5 or 7 days giving unlimited travel on buses, ferries and city rail.

The main terminal for city rail is Central Station, which is also the terminus for intra and interstate trains. Sydney Buses has a service called 'The Explorer', which is an excellent way of sightseeing Sydney for the first time. Sydney's Metro Monorail is on of the few above-ground rail systems in the world. Ride it for the experience. The circular route winds its way through the CBD and around Darling Harbour.

Ferries are the most sublime form of public transportation. Each trip is its own harbour cruise. There are regular services to over 37 wharves, including Manly, Parramatta, Balmain, Watsons Bay and Taronga Zoo.

I have been here a few times now. Alas always on business but I have managed to fit in some exploring on each trip. Hard to sum up this place - there is so much on offer. Go, explore, go again, explore some more, repeat. As with most great cities the more you visit the more it opens up to you.
