Closely resembling Bodhnath, the massive white dome of Swayambhunath’s stupa sits atop a hill to the west of Kathmandu. Reached by steps visitors and pilgrims alike come to a massive vajra or thunderbolt cast in bronze and enter the precincts of one of the most spectacular temples anywhere on earth.

Believed to be over 2000 years old the “self-arising” Swayambhunath is said to have floated in the midst of a giant lake that covered the Kathmandu Valley floor. Certainly the site is ancient and carved text places it easily as old as 460 AD. The entire complex is a conglomeration of shrines and temples whilst the stupa itself is reminiscent of that at Bodhnath, bedecked as it is with prayer-flags and crowned with a golden spire.

The dome itself represents the water. The golden spire that surmounts the dome rises in 13 levels representing the 13 stages to attain nirvana whilst the spire itself symbolizes fire. On each of the four sides of the square base of the spire are the all watchful eyes of the Buddha whilst finally the “umbrella” represents air.

The familiar name, the Monkey Temple will become self evident as dozens of monkeys make the site their home and, amusingly, their playground.

Attractions in Swayambhunath

The golden-roofed pagoda-style Hariti Temple is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, something common on the sub-continent and can be found to the northwest of the stupa. Look for the many pillars holding aloft gods and goddesses and inside the Kargyud Gompa a large 6m high statue of Sakyamuni, perhaps the most familiar representation of the Buddha.

Activities in Swayambhunath

Allow at least 3 hours to explore Swayambhunath, preferably with a local guide who will be able to decipher the many different aspects of this extensive site.

Relaxing

The site is usually very busy and if time-out is called for seek out one of the little tea-shops where no doubt you’ll join pilgrims from Tibet
