Swakopmund is situated on the central Atlantic coast of the country and is Namibia’s second largest town and the traditional “summer capital” of the country. Swakopmund remains a charming town, with a resemblance to a Bavarian village nestling between the Namib desert and the Atlantic Ocean.
The city still retains many of the old German Colonial buildings including an old museum/store selling genuine artefacts from the 19th century. Woermann House, built in 1905 houses the Swakopmund Art Association and Public Library, its tower gives panoramic views over the desert and sea. The Lighthouse, harbour breakwaters (known as the Mole) and the old iron jetty are some of the towns most prominent landmarks.

There are several good shops selling souvenirs and art, also a good craft market near the lighthouse.
Activities in Swakopmund
The sand dunes that surround Swakopmund provide some excellent sporting opportunities including sand-boarding, skiing, quad biking, camel rides and off-road driving. From the harbour it is possible to take a boat excursion to view the dolphins and seals or just relax on the beach.
Enjoy a round of golf at Rossmund, a grass golf course at the edge of the Namib Desert some ten miles from Swakopmund, where golfers are invariably greeted by a herd of springbok quietly grazing on a fairway, or by a gaggle of Egyptian geese.
Relaxing
There is plenty of entertainment in Swakopmund including casinos, a good mix of pubs and restaurants and many cultural and musical events.
Getting Around
Minibuses operate several times a day from Windhoek to Swakopmund. There is no public transport in Swakopmund as the city is small enough to get around easily on foot.
