Meaning "City of the Good People" Surat Thani is the former seat of the Srivijaya Empire and is the name of the largest province in southern Thailand. It is best known as the jumping off point for the islands of Ko Samui and Ko Phangnan.

Attrractions include the Khao Tha Phet Wildlife and Nature Education Centre 6 km from town. Covering an area of 1,162 acres there are a number of wild animals to be seen. Up on Khao Tha Phet, some 210m, stands a stupa named Phra That Si Surat which houses Buddha relics donated by the Indian Government - there are also great views to be enjoyed.
