The dramatic location of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Sumela is nothing short of amazing, clinging tenaciously to the cliffs of Mt Mela. Travellers today come to admire the spot and to look at the centuries-old frescoes and living quarters of the monks which hang dramatically over the valley below.

In the 4th century two Greek monks, Barnabus and Sophronus, were guided by a black icon to a spot high on the cliffs of Mt Mela where they founded a monastery. It became a place of pilgrimage after their death and was decorated with frescoes. It was occupied and protected by Ottoman sultans but was damaged and finally abandoned during the 1920 War of Independence. Today its location perched atop the cliffs above the Altındere Valley continues to amaze visitors.

Attractions in Sumela Monastery

On arrival there are a couple of routes up but the longer one follows a 1km path through atmospheric pine-forest, a walk of around a ½ hour. The frescoes inside date from the 9th to the 19th centuries and whilst in relatively poor repair hint at their former glory. The façade that is most often captured in pictures of the monastery comprises of the 5 storeys of monks’ living quarters – what a view they must have had!

Activities in Sumela Monastery

A trip to the monastery will take the best part of a full day. Guided tours are available from Trabzon but you may prefer to organise yourself either using a driver guide which will enable you to explore at leisure and as much time as you want. Guides can occasionally be found at the site entrance.

Relaxing

There are some attractive A-frame buildings which are for rent - the attached restaurant has good food and a great setting - perfect for relaxing in after your visit.

Getting Around

The monastery can be reached easily by public transport in the summer months when a bus runs from city to the monastery from the Ulusoy ticket office. Hiring a driver guide will give most flexibility alternatively tours are available from travel agents in town itself.
