Stellenbosch draws wine-lovers and travellers from all around the world. The Stellenbosch 'Wine of Origin' area now comprises more than 110 cellars. Most are open to the public and some of the finest, award-winning wines are available. An important cultural centre, Stellenbosch also has many galleries and museums housing important national and international art collections and the Stellenbosch Conservatoire is the country´s oldest music school.

Located in the heart of the Cape Winelands the town of Stellenbosch dates back to 1679 when the name was given to a small island on the Eerste River by Simon van der Stel who was Governor of the Cape. It was soon identified as having great potential for agriculture with rich soil and an excellent climate. Settlers soon found the hills and valleys covered in vines.

The Stellenbosch wine farms have mostly been handed down from generation to generation. The wine of the region is of a very high standard and regularly wins international awards. The region also boasts a wealth of the South African wine industry´s top wines. Wine tours are a highlight for any visitor with a choice of characterful old vineyards or modern large estates.

Attractions in Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch offers travellers everything from high adventure to natural beauty. Discover the rich historical and cultural heritage of this area where splendid examples of Cape Dutch architecture have been preserved.

In Dorp Street there is the longest row of old buildings surviving in any major town in southern Africa, most dating back to the 19th century. Stellenbosh is also virtually surrounded by beautiful mountains.

Activities in Stellenbosch

On top of visiting the vineyards there are many hiking and biking trails in the magnificent mountains and hills surrounding the town.

Relaxing

A glass or two of wine!! Look out for the “Proudly Stellenbosch” signs on restaurant doors – showing that the restaurant serves a variety of locally produced wines.

Getting Around

As most vineyards are not within the town it is best to either self-drive or join an organised tour (depending on how much tasting you wish to do!!)

Stellenbosch: Wine tasting in Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch town and its surrounding areas are absolutely stunning. This is not adventure travel, but when you have been touring round for a few weeks this place just lets you relax and unwind. The town centre is beautiful, with really nice bars, cafes, serving great food.....and wine of course! We only had a day in the area as we were finishing our trip heading back to Cape Town - however next time we will spend 2-3 days just relaxing. Visit one of many wine estates for a wine tasting (most offer it). We know very little about wine, apart from how to drink it.....so the tasting was good fun - although it seemed rude to spit it out! So, good for a day trip from Cape Town but I will back for the full wine tour next time.
