St. Tropez, is a beautiful picture postcard town located on the French Riviera. With the azure blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, pavement cafes and restaurants and luxurious sailing boats and yachts it is one of the favourite holiday spots of the Riviera.
The beaches of St. Tropez are an additional attraction with Plage de Pampelonne being the most famous. With so many beaches there are plenty of opportunities for sun bathing but St Tropez does offer other activities such as walking, horse riding, snorkelling, scuba diving, windsurfing, para-sailing, jet-skiing and sailing. For those interested in culture there are some unique museums, art galleries, special concerts, exhibits and special events scheduled year round.
St. Tropez was a favourite place to live and work for some of the world's best known artists and sculptors until it was discovered by Hollywood in the 1950s and 60s. The town is now a tourist hot spot especially during the spring and summer months, when the narrow winding roads can become very crowded.
Attractions in St Tropez
The Musee de l'Annoncaide contains possibly one of the best modern art collections in the Riviera, with many paintings of St Tropez permanently exhibited.
The Open Air Market (Place de Lices) on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, is packed with amazing fresh fruits, vegetables and souvenirs. Le Quartier de la Ponche is the old part of the city, with narrow winding streets filled with shops and traditional houses.
Musee Naval forms part of the Citadel, a structure dating back to the 1500s, and exhibits scale models of cannons and ships, old photos of the town, and a wide variety of interesting items. La Maison de Papillons houses over 4,500 different species of butterflies, including some that are almost extinct. For other beaches with great views visit Bouillabaisse, Baneliers and Salins or for somewhere a little less crowded head for the less accessible beaches of Plage de l'Escalet and Plage de la Briande.
In the hills above St Tropez are the small medieval villages of Eze and St. Paul de Vence, which now inhabited by artisans and crafts people.
