Located on the Dalmatian Coast, the town of Split is the main city in Dalmatia and one of the largest cites in Croatia. The city is just over 1,700 years old and was founded when the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace on the site of today’s Split. Diocletian's Palace is located in the centre of Split and is a superbly preserved Roman palace which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Split is also well known for its cultural events including Split Summer Festival which takes places from mid July to mid August. The Croatian National Theatre, the Peristile, other old town squares and the courtyard of the Cathedral of St Domnius are the venues for various performances including theatrical performances, classical musical concerts, operas, puppet shows and dance performances.
