The island of Sipadan, located off the coast of Sabah and the town of Semporna and is widely considered one of the best diving areas in this part of the world, if not in the world. It is the only oceanic island in Malaysia rising 2,000 feet (600 meters) on a limestone pinnacle and has waters that are so clear that visibility is over 100 feet. As well as having the largest variety of soft corals in the world, its wildlife includes turtles, lobster, barracudas, beautiful coral fishes and sometimes sharks. As well as been a fantastic dive site, Sipadan is also a bird sanctuary which is home to many frigates, sea eagles, terns and sea-gulls. A must for any diver in the region.
Malaysia became a truly global diving destination in the late 1980s, when the delights of the island of Sipadan was discovered. There is something for divers and snorkellers of all levels therefore making this area the place to come back to time and time again.
Attractions in Sipadan
There is much to see including turtles, sharks, jacks, moray eels, octopus, cuttlefish, cleaner shrimps, starfish, nudibranchs and of course coral.
Turtle Cave is famous for the incredible natural geology inside the cave system and because it houses the skeletal remains of turtles and dolphins. Rather than old turtles coming here to die in peace it seems that that they simply enter the cave and become lost. Their remains finally settle, somewhat eerily, on the sandy floor of the cave.
Barracuda Point is quite simply a "must dive" if you visit Sipadan. Its highlights are its coral wall and the amazing number of turtles as well as shoals of batfish, jacks and barracuda.
Sipadan is famous for its large population of green turtles which are found all year-round, but their numbers increase during August. You should get to see at least ten turtles on every dive.
