Rising on the south east slopes of Machhapuchhare, the Fishtail Mountain, then flowing south the Seti provides many visitors to Nepal with their very first white-water rafting experience. Generally a Grade 2 to Grade 3 river changing to Grade 4 during the monsoon this river is suitable for novice rafters searching for a manageable first experience, except at monsoon times when the river shows its true colours!
From Machhapuchhare the Seti flows south and is dammed just above Pokhara for hydro-electric power and, shortly afterwards disappears into a deep and very narrow chasm to reappear again in a wide valley a few kilometres below the city. Rafting trips are usually 2-day affairs and take rafters through 100 metre high cliffs, gorges and jungle. Camps are always a great way to relax and reflect on the say’s activities.
Much birdlife is evident and there is lots of hanging, green vegetation. Because of its grading the river is suitable for families or novice rafters out of the monsoon season. The put in point is usually Damauli and the finish at Gaighat – a two-day rafting trip to which many people add on a visit to Chitwan National Park.
