A National Park since 1993 (formerly Bwamba Forest Reserve), Semliki is one of Uganda's newest Parks. Situated in a remote corner of southwestern Uganda, in Bundibugyo district, it protects an eastern extension of the vast Ituri Forest and forms part of a forest continuum that stretches across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the Zaire River.
The Park occupies a flat to gently undulating landform ranging from 670-760 metres above sea level. Many areas of the park are flooded during the rainy season due to poor drainage and topography as flooded streams and rivers drain into the Park. The average annual rainfall is 1250 mm with peaks from March to May and September and December. Semliki lies within the western arm of the East African Rift Valley with the Rwenzori Mountains to the southeast, to the west is DRC, and to the north Lake Albert.
Attractions in Semliki National Park
Semliki is a scenic park and offers breathtaking views, even on the drive in along the meandering Bundibugyo road through the Rwenzori escarpment. Two hot springs are situated in a tract of hot mineral encrusted swampland, rich in visible bird, insect and mammal life and accessed by a modern trail network. Here you'll see a 2m jet of hot water and a 12m pool of oozing boiling water.

Getting Around
From Fort Portal, a 2-3 hour drive (52 km) on a rough road towards Bundibugyo will bring you to Sempaya Gate. The NP headquarters are located at Ntandi, a further 5 km from the gate along the same route. A vehicle with high clearance is recommended.
