Buddhists worldwide look to Sarnath as the place where Buddha gave his first sermon after achieving enlightenment. Today its stupa is a place of pilgrimage, whilst the grounds and museum provide a pleasant place for non-Buddhists to relax.
The Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya and then came to Sarnath. Here in what is now known as the Deer Park he delivered his first sermon, setting in motion what Buddhists call the Wheel of Law (Maha-Dharmachakra Pravartan.).
On the day before his death Buddha included Sarnath along with Lumbini, Bodh Gaya and Kushinagar as the four places he thought to be sacred to his followers.
