São Jorge is a long, snaking spine of peaks, whose backbone is peppered with lush green craters. It is one of the most scenically dramatic and friendly islands in the Azores. Velas, the picturesque capital, is a sleepy harbour town dating from the mid 1400s and has a delightful traditional Azorean bandstand in the main square. The majority of the locals live on the coastal plains (fajãs) which lie at the foot of the steep volcanic cliffs and are home to an abundance of bird life including the Cory Shearwater.

At 56km long and only 8km wide, Sao Jorge was formed as a result of successive volcanic eruptions in a straight line. The average height of its spine is 700m rising to 1053m at its highest point and there is very little settlement in the interior due to the rugged terrain.

As well as its wonderful walking, Sao Jorge is also famous for its cheese. Made in small cooperatives, it is like a mature, tangy cheddar.

Attractions in Sao Jorge

The main attraction of the island is its wonderful walks, but there are also some beautiful churches, pretty fishing villages and inviting lagoons.

Activities in Sao Jorge

Sao Jorge is small and not that developed touristically so the main activity on the island is walking although some experienced surfers make it here to take advantage of the Atlantic breakers.

Relaxing

Take a dip in the ocean at Faja do Ouvidor beneath towering cliffs.

Getting Around

There are interisland flights to Sao Jorge from Terceira and Sao Miguel and also ferries from Faial and Pico. Once on the island, you are best to either hire a car or use taxis which are very reasonable.
