São Felipe, the capital of Fogo, grew out of the former Ribeira Grande in Santiago, making it one of Cape Verde’s oldest towns. Each year it plays host to the colourful ‘Festival of Bandeira’.
Built on the top of a cliff, São Felipe faces out over the Atlantic Ocean with a view of its neighbour, the tiny island of Brava.
Attractions in São Filipe
With quiet and peaceful streets and squares, well-kept gardens and Portuguese colonial-style houses - including the ‘sobrados’, the houses of former wealthy landowners - São Felipe is a pleasant town, and an ideal base for island exploration. Beneath the town, at the foot of the cliff, a black sand beach serves as a natural port for typical Cape Verdean multi-coloured fishing boats.
Over the last days of April and culminating on 1st May, the streets of São Filipe erupt during one of Cape Verde’s largest traditional festivals – the Festival of Bandeira. After mass follows a procession, exciting horse races and an exhibition of local cuisine.
