Also known as James Island or San Sebastian, Santiago Island is the fourth-largest island in Galapagos. Its proximity to Santa Cruz and the airport at Baltra make it – and the surrounding isles of Bartolome, Rabida and Sombrero Chino – some of the most visited in the archipelago.
The human impact on these islands has been significant. The introduction of pigs and goats to Santiago in the 1880s decimated much of the natural wildlife, with the population of goats reaching over 100,000 at one point. In 2001 the National Park Service finally succeeded in eradicating pigs from the island. Their work on the goat population continues.
There are four main landing sites on Santiago Island, which offer a good overview of the island’s wildlife, volcanic geomorphology, evolutionary and succession, as well as human history: Buccaneer Cove, Playa Espumilla, Puerto Egas on James Bay and Sullivan Bay.
The cliffs, bays and channels surrounding this collection of islands are truly the heart of Galapagos. At every turn they are rich in life, whether on the land, in the air or beneath the clear blue waters.
