Vibrant Santiago de Cuba is the country’s second largest city and capital of the province of the same name. The lively coastal city is well known for its lively carnivals, rich Afro Cuban culture and friendly people.
Overlooked by El Morro castle, which defended the city in times gone by, Santiago’s narrow, music filled streets are great to wander around and contain many fascinating places to visit, including the cathedral and the Colonial Museum.
Visitors can also enjoy hiking in the nearby Sierra Maestra mountains. A trail here leads to the top of Pico Turquino, Cuba's highest mountain; a challenging but especially rewarding hike which involves a night camped on the mountainside.
