Often overlooked, Santiago surrounded by a number of attractions, from beautiful national parks such as La Campana with its hiking opportunities, to some of the country's top and most exclusive ski resorts such as Portillo and El Colorado near the border with Argentina.
Picturesque villages and mountain scenery surround the colonial town of Los Andes to the north while to the south the Cajón del Maipo valley is great for hiking, rafting and mountain biking.
Two main national parks can be found around the city of Santiago, one of them being the Campana National Park, known for its hiking opportunities and wonderful views over a semi-arid landscape. From the 1880-metre Cerro La Campana peak once climbed by Charles Darwin you can see as far as the Pacific Ocean.
Just a couple of hours from some of South America's best ski resorts, Santiago is popular with skiers during the July-September season. Two main options are available – a two hour trip to the high-end resort of Portillo or a 90 minute drive to Farellones and the resorts of El Colorado, La Parva and Valle Nevado, all increasing in popularity and with great slopes.
A beautiful Andean valley, Cajón del Maipo is a huge draw for locals and tourists alike. An excellent place to escape to from the city, organised hiking, rafting and mountain biking are available.
