Just south east of Sao Miguel lies some of the Azores’ most dramatic beaches and spectacular coastline. With its deep sandy bays and lush green interior, Santa Maria is a paradise for surfers and walkers alike.
As you arrive on Santa Maria, you will sense the tranquillity of this little visited island. The scenery is breathtaking, with green mountains in the east contrasting with the flat plains in the west.
On the west you’ll find the parishes of Vila do Porto, Sao Pedro and Almagreira, along with the fabulous beach at Praia Formosa and to the east is the shell-shaped bay of St Lawrence with its clear waters and pale sand beach.
All over the island you’ll see the distinctive Algarve style chimneys on the typical whitewashed homes.
