Sandur, which stands for sandy beach, is a village on the south coast of the island of Sandoy and is the most populous place on Sandoy Island. The Municipality of Sandur consists of just the village of Sandur and is situated on a peninsula between the lakes Gróthúsvatn in the northwest and Sandsvatn in the northeast, facing the inlets Grótvík and Sandsvágur in the south.
Attractions in Sandur
Sandoy holds its summer festival at the end of July with sports, exhibitions, and meetings. The town is also known for its annual music festival "Mjus."
Activities in Sandur
Enjoy fishing at Sandsvatn and Gróthúsvatn; trips to Søltuvík on the west coast, Skarvanes in the south, and Húsavík on the east coast; and hiking tours. Particularly interesting is the tour in the Faroese rowboat Hvíthamar from Sandur to the bird rocks on the west coast, or to Skúvoy.
Getting Around
Sandur can be reached from Tórshavn via the ferry ports Gamlarætt and Skopun. From there travel along the Sandsvatn on Road 30 to Sandur. All villages on the island can be reached by bus from Sandur.
