Sandomierz is one of the oldest and historically most significant cities in Poland. A great asset of Sandomierz is its beautiful location on the border of the Swietokrzyskie Mountains, the Sandomierska Dales and the Lubelska Upland. The sandy area where the town stands is cut through by a rich network of gorges – one of the best known is the Gorge of Queen Jadwiga, which is more than 400 metres long.

The city came into existence in the early Middle Ages, taking advantage of an excellent location at the junction of the Vistula and San rivers, and on the path of important trade routes. The first known historical mention of the city comes from the early 12th century, when the chronicler Gallus Anonymus ranked it together with Kraków and Wrocław as one of the main cities of Poland.

Attractions in Sandomierz

From over 120 monuments in Sandomierz, the architectural-landscape complex of the Old Town, preserving the lay-out from the second half of the 14th century, and the Dominican monastery complex of St. James’s Church are generally recognised as the most important.

There are also preserved remains of Gothic fortified walls with the Opatowska Gate and the Castle, as well as the Town Hall, the Cathedral, numerous churches, burghers’ houses and suburban manor-houses.... Plenty to keep visitors busy for at least a day or so.

Relaxing

Many pubs, music clubs, cafes and restaurants offer their services in the Old Town area.

Getting Around

Sandomierz is located about 240 km from Warsaw, 170 km from Kraków and 100 km from Rzeszow. The best way to absorb the atmosphere of Sandomierz is on foot.
