San Pedro Sula is the arrival point for many visitors to Honduras arrive and it is from here that they continue their journey, but the area around this city has enough to keep you here for at least a couple of days.

North towards the coast is Puerto Cortes, the country's most important port – home to tropical beaches and some of the most important Garifuna villages in the country, such as the festive Bajamar. Just west of San Pedro Sula are the Merendon mountains, home of the Cusuco National Cloud Forest Park that has some of the best infrastructure in the country. Omoa and its huge fortress lay just west of Puerto Cortes and, again, is just a short distance from San Pedro Sula. This town, one of the country's oldest, is steeped in colonial history.

The city of San Pedro Sula is the economic capital of the country, with its 1 million inhabitants producing roughly 40% of the country’s GDP. It is also a transport hub, owing to its international airport.

Without doubt the best connected city in the country, from here all of Honduras can be explored by road or air. But, while San Pedro Sula may not have retained its colonial architecture, there are still many reasons to avoid moving off so quickly or just catching that connecting flight. Nearby there are as many treasures to be discovered as elsewhere in the country.

In Honduras, one is never far from mountains, coast, wildlife, ethnic diversity and history and the area around San Pedro Sula is no exception: mountains and wildlife are found in abundance at the Cusuco National Cloud Forest Park; Puerto Cortes is on the Caribbean coast and boasts some good beaches and interesting Garifuna culture; and San Pedro Sula’s Museum of Anthropology and History gives a good overview of Honduras’ past, while the San Fernando de Omoa Fortress is a National Monument with a great history of its own.
