Sat atop a hill within striking distance of both Florence and Siena San Gimignano’s towers are instantly recognisable. With a history stretching back 2300 years it’s a highlight of any visit to Tuscany and makes for a great day trip or as a centre for exploration in its own right.
The UNESCO-recognised tower town of San Gimignano rises 334m above sea level atop a hill looking out over the Tuscan countryside, dominating the Elsa Valley with its magnificent towers. Once the seat of a small Etruscan village during the Hellenistic period (200-300 BC) it really began to prosper during the 10th century when it took its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from barbarian hordes.
Sat on the Via Francigena pilgrim road it prospered and this lead to the flourishing of works of art to adorn the churches and monasteries. It became a free municipality in 1199 and fought against the Bishops of Volterra and the surrounding municipalities. Internal disputes meant it eventually divided into two factions, one headed by the Ardinghelli family (Guelphs) and the other by the Salvucci family (Ghibellines).
Its famous towers date from the 11th to 13th centuries and the architecture of the city was influenced by Pisa, Siena and Florence. There are 14th century paintings of the Siena School to be seen and 15th century paintings of the Florentine School.
