7th century Sambor Prei Kuk is one of the oldest Angkorian sites and lies 30km from the small, sleepy town of Kompong Thom - half way from Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and is a good reason to break the journey between the two. Those that do will be able to wander around ruins choked with tree roots as at Ta Prohm. Whilst not Angkor a visit is a highlight of the north.
Originally call Ishanapura Sambor Prei Kuk is an ancient Chenla city and had its heyday between the 7th and 10th centuries at which point it fell into decline and was eventually abandoned.
The brick, rather than stone, temples remain largely un-restored and sit in a lovely forested location a good way from any major towns. More than 600 years older than Angkor Wat the brick interiors are in surprisingly good condition, especially so considering the climate.
Many of the towers contained impressive statuary and reproductions have been put in place to show to give a feeling of what it must have been like. This area was bombed heavily during the Vietnam war and the American bombs did much damage.
Attractions in Sambor Prei Kuk
The attraction of Sambor Prei Kuk is more in the atmosphere than by the grandeur of the remains. The towers in the North Group of temples are impressive carrying carvings of the Flying Palace which was the home of the guardian spirits and a gateway is also spectacular. Climb inside the mass of tree roots that strangle Prasat N18 one of the highlights of Sambor Prei Kuk.
