The Samaria Gorge is the longest gorge in Europe and perhaps the most popular hike in the Mediterranean.
Beginning high up in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), the walk leads though a variety of scenery from pine and cypress forests to towering rock walls that close in to just 3 metres width at the narrowest point – known as the ‘Iron Gates’. There are soaring peaks on either side and meadows filled in spring with wild flowers. Those choosing to hike here drop 1,250 metres in 17 kilometres, to meet the refreshing waters of the Mediterranean sea at Agia Roumeli, the walk’s end.
Closed in winter months, when the river is in flood, the gorge walk is long, but not difficult, and is enjoyed every year by thousands of walkers wanting a unique experience.
From the Xyloskalo (Wooden Staircase), which falls 1,00 metres in around 2 kilometres, following the course of the river, which disappears underground in various places, to the floodplain and the unspoiled village of Agia Roumeli.
Footsore and weary, a drink in one of the tavernas and a refreshing swim will revive you for the boat trip back along the coast.
Attractions in Samaria Gorge
The top of the gorge is at the south side of the Omalos Plateau, high in the White Mountains. There is a fascinating little museum near the top which shows the geological formation of the gorge, its history and wildlife.
The mountains loom closely, especially Gingalos, to the west (a good day’s walk in itself).
Around the half way point is the deserted village of Samaria, which is a good place for a packed lunch.
The path winds down, crossing the river at numerous points. The most impressive part of the gorge, where it narrows to a mule track comes in the afternoon.
There are lavatories and springs for water at various places on the trail.
Activities in Samaria Gorge
Although thousands transverse the gorge each year, there are still places where you can feel alone. It is walked by people of all ages, the potential problem being blisters.
A growing number of people now walk up the gorge, the main advantage being a peaceful afternoon after the crowds have passed. Another alternative is to leave later in the morning and stay overnight in Agia Roumeli.
Relaxing
Soak your feet in the cooling sea waters at the end of the day's hike.
Getting Around
You may do this independently or through one of the numerous tour companies offering the excursion.
