Tourism has boomed on Honduras's Caribbean coast and Roatan is now a top destination. Crystal-clear waters and well-established dive shops make Roatan a divers’ paradise – it is rightly famous for its diving, snorkelling and fishing

Roatan Island offers something for everyone – beaches, night life, reefs, culture, isolation and civilisation.

The largest and most developed of the Bay Islands, Roatan offers the infrastructure of any developed tourist destination but also provides easy access to less developed and more isolated parts of the island as well as its neighbours. You can find isolated beaches along with top resort hotels.

The island of Roatan is mostly inhabited by the Garifuna people, shipped to and abandoned here by the British who declared them their enemies after a rebellion.

There are a variety of urban centres on Roatan, ranging from the practical ports – Coxen Hole and French Harbour – to the more tourist-oriented – Sandy Bay and West End. At the far reaches of the island, there are still a couple of towns that are neither of these things, and manage to retain a traditional feel: Oak Ridge and Punta Gorda.
