Founded in the 16th century the small town of Ribeira Grande has no real attraction other than serving as a base for walkers seeking to hike the northeast valleys that flank the town. There is a growing range of simple accommodation and places to eat.
The town is also known as Povoação. Hiking is the activity in this area. Guides and alaguer transport is available locally but is best pre-booked if on a tight schedule. Travellers should keep an eye out for birds – vultures, kestrels, wagtails, blackcaps and sparrows can often be spotted.
Attractions in Ribeira Grande
The main attraction of this region is the spectacular scenery. If not up to walking then an effort should be made to travel to other settlements along the coast by road to gain an appreciation of the local way of life and nature.
