Enveloped in silent mountains, Ribeira Brava, the island’s capital, is a pleasant town which takes its name from the nearby river whose waters run torrentially when it rains. Its beauty lies in its narrow streets, houses painted in gentle pastel colours, well-kept gardens, and an impressive central square with Portuguese-style colonial buildings.
Vulnerable to pirate attacks in the 17th century, Ribeira Brava was preferred as a place for locals to gather together due to its difficult access from the coast.
Attractions in Ribeira Brava
Worth seeing in town, in architectural terms, are the 17th century Matriz Church, the Seminary-High School (Cape Verde’s first secondary school) and the main square, where a bust of Dr. Julio José Dias, the Island's doctor and benefactor was erected.
For something further afield, take a drive on one of the most spectacular roads in Cape Verde from Ribeira Brava to Tarrafal (25 km). After negotiating deep creeks on the north coast, the road turns inland before winding south to the black sand beach and town of Tarrafal.

From Ribeira Brava several lovely walks of varying degrees of difficulty and duration are possible. Fishing is a popular activity from Tarrafal.
