Rara National Park is Nepal's smallest and most scenic national park covering just 106sq km and protects some of the most beautiful alpine and sub-alpine ecosystems of the Himalaya. The centrepiece is of course the pristine lake, the biggest in Nepal. Views of the lake, the thickly forested hillsides and snow-capped peaks around it together with its alpine wildlife make it a magnet to trekkers in the east of the country.

370 km north-west of Kathmandu, Rara National Park is accessed by trekking from Jumla. Nepal's smallest national park lies at an altitude of about 3,000 meters and was established in 1976. Known as Mahendra Tal, Rara Lake is the biggest lake in Nepal and is surrounded by richly forested hills such as Chuchemara Danda (4,087 m) which provides the best vantage point. Other summits in the park area are Ruma Kand (3,731 m) and Malika Kand (3,444 m.), situated to the north of the lake.

Rara comes within the catchment area of the Karnali River, one of the three main river systems of Nepal and the region’s habitat supports animals such as the red panda, black bear, yellow-throated martin, ghoral, serow and musk deer; there have also been reported sightings of leopard and wolf. Meanwhile wildfowl such as teals, pochards and mallards are attracted to the lake.
