Covering 392 sq km Ranthambore’s name is synonymous with India’s most famous wildlife icon, the royal Bengal tiger. Sprawling over the undulating terrain of the Aravalli and Vindhyan Hills the park is one of the finest tiger reserves in India and is home to a multitude of other species of animals and a prolific birdlife, all of which can be enjoyed on jeep safaris. A magnet for anyone with even a passing interest in India’s natural history Ranthambore is unmissable.
The history of Ranthambore is linked with famous names from India’s history and those personages unwittingly helped shape its magical landscape littered as it is with their impressive forts, temples and hunting lodges, now taken over by the wildlife.
The park lies at the junction of the Aravalli and Vindhyan Hills, just 14kms from the town of Sawai Madhopur in eastern Rajasthan. It sprawls over a varying and undulating landscape, alternating between dry deciduous forest and open grassy meadow, dotted by lakes and rivers and whose interior is only made passable by rough roads built and maintained by the Forest Service. The park is well staffed and the people who staff the centres and the mandatory guides - one for every vehicle - are knowledgeable of the terrain.
A vast range of animal and birdlife can be found and with comfortable accommodation on the park’s periphery and turn-up-and-ride game drives there is every chance of spotting some of the park’s more famous residents.
Attractions in Ranthambore NP
Around 300 species of birds make their home in the park with painted storks, flamingos, spoonbills, sarus and demoiselle cranes, parakeets, flycatchers, painted spurfowl and peafowl all to be found. Mammals and reptiles include langur, leopard, caracal, hyena, jackal, jungle cat, marsh crocodile, krait, turtles, chameleon, python, wild boar, bears and various species of deer, however it is the royal Bengal tiger that is the star attraction. Precise numbers are difficult to come by, but there are around 40 tigers in the park. These are best spotted on a game drive by jeep which allows access deep into the further reaches of the park.
Activities in Ranthambore NP
Allow a minimum two-day stay to maximise your chances of seeing a variety of wildlife on game drives.
Relaxing
There are a number of very comfortable hotels and lodges scattered around the park – perfect for relaxing in between safaris and mugging up the difference between a sambar and chital.
Getting Around
Game drives cannot be pre-booked – it’s a case of first come first served and as demand outstrips supply this can be disconcerting as chaos can reign. There are both jeeps and cantors available for such drives with jeeps taking 5 people and cantors around a dozen.
