With some of the most breathtaking scenery in Ecuador, the region of Quilotoa is perfect for travellers seeking a taste of indigenous farm life and spectacular mountain landscapes. This Volcanic Crater Lake is one of the most striking sites in Ecuador and one of the most beautiful craters in Latin America, with lustrous emerald waters and excellent hiking paths.
Quilotoa is a dormant crater lake located high in the Western Cordilleras of the Andes, 35 kilometres west of Latacunga. The lake strats in Latacunga, 200 kilometres of mostly unpaved road winds through patchwork hills and along riverbeds, connecting tiny mountain villages to the west, then circling back to Latacunga. The caldera is oval shaped with an diameter of 2.5 kilometres with the steep crater walls dropping in some parts more than 300 metres to the water level at 3 500 metres. The lake is 240 metres deep and its water is alkaline with no fish living in.
