The base from which to head north into the Torres del Paine National Park, Puerto Natales is considered Chilean Patagonia’s “second city”. Located on the Last Hope Sound, a narrow channel with snowy mountains across its waters, it has more to offer than just a place to stay.
The city is located on the Last Hope Sound, so named by Spanish explorer Juan Ladrilleros who was having trouble finding the entrance to the Magellan Strait and was on the verge of giving up, most of his crew perishing.
Considered a base for trips into the nearby Torres del Paine National Park, Puerto Natales is where most hotels, restaurants, equipment retailers and tour operators are located. Local attractions include the church on the plaza with its beautiful interior and a small museum detailing the history of the Aonikenk and Kaweshkar indigenous tribes who once inhabited these lands.
A short distance outside the city of Puerto Natales is the Cueva del Milodón, a fascinating cave where in 1885 the well preserved fur of the extict Milodon was found.
