Administrative capital for the islands, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the second largest settlement in Galapagos after Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. Since the airport opened on San Cristobal Island in the 1980s, the town has started to develop for visitors, with a number of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops which cater for the small numbers of visitors who choose to spend a few days here.
A popular place to stay for travellers who do not want to restrict their visit to being on board a boat, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is often used as a base for an extension to a Galapagos tour, or as part of a three-centre stay on the islands, together with a stay in Puerto Villamil on Isabela and Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz.
The excellent range of attractions to be found here include all of the classic San Cristobel visits, as well as the modern Puerto Baquerizo Moreno Interpretation Centre, Las Tijeretas (Frigate-Bird Hill), La Loberia (a good place to see sea lions, iguanas and sometimes surf), Puerto Chico beach on the eastern coast of the island, and Playa Mann, a beautiful beach just a short walk from town. Surfers enjoy catching the waves Tongo Reef, El Canyon and Punta Carrola and Tonga Reef.
