Ponta do Sol is home to the island’s only aerodrome, built on land reclaimed from the sea. A very peaceful town, with some buildings dating from the colonial era, there is a growing choice of accommodation and places to eat. For travellers and walkers the town serves as an alternative centre-base to Ribeira Grande.

The town is the administrative centre of the island. Hiking is the activity in this area. Guides and alaguer transport is available locally but is best pre-booked if on a tight schedule. Travellers should keep an eye out for birds – vultures, kestrels, wagtails, blackcaps and sparrows can often be spotted.

Attractions in Ponta do Sol

The main attraction of this region is the spectacular scenery. If not up to walking then an effort should be made to travel to other settlements along the coast by road to gain an appreciation of the local way of life and nature.
