Now one of South Africa's most popular holiday town's, Plettenberg Bay had been named Bahia Formosa (Beautiful Bay) in 1630, when the first Portuguese explorers settled-South Africa´s first European settlement.
With 18 km of coastline landmarked by the Robberg Nature Reserve. The region is known for its rich inter-tidal eco-system and diversity of birds. Nelson´s Cave was inhabited over 120 000 years ago, leaving a legacy of some 250,000 artifacts. The Matjies River Shelter, too, has yielded many treasures.
Sea kayaking affords you a bird´s eye view of dolphins, whales, penguins and Cape fur seals at play in the warm waters. Back on land, the 'Arts, Craft and Cultural Route' takes in a jeweller, goldsmith, painter, potter, cabinet-maker, art and antique shops.
Attractions in Plettenberg Bay
Visit Robberg Nature Reserve which offers both angling and walking. Choose from the 45-minute, 2-hour and 9.2 kilometre or 4 ½ hour walk. Guided tours are offered, which also take in the caves, as well as offering information about Robberg´s geology, archeology and existing marine life. The Robberg Nature Reserve affords an incredible vista from which to observe dolphins and whales at play below the cliffs.
Plettenberg Bay offers outstanding whale watching facilities with ideal viewpoints along the coastline. Southern Right Whatles visit between the months of June to September.
Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary is home to many species and the worlds only multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary.

Plettenberg comes ablaze during key holiday periods, notably during the Easter, June-July, and December-January holiday season. It can be argued that there is no better place to see in the New Year in South Africa than at Plettenberg, when fireworks ignite the clear night sky.
