Bordering the harbour area in the northeast, the Playa de las Alcaravaneras is the second longest of Las Palmas beaches. It is located just north of the Club Maritimo Varadero Marina and flanked in the south by the chic Real Club Náutico (Royal Sailing Club), where always some glamorous ocean-going yachts can be spotted. This beach is about 1 kilometre long and is particularly popular with local Las Palmas Residents. The Avenida Maritima, which is one of the City's principle arteries, runs parallel and the coastal walkway is popular with local joggers and rollerskaters.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the capital of the island, is located in the north-eastern part of the island just 210 kilometers off the northwestern coast of the African continent within the Atlantic Ocean. It is also the co-capital of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands, sharing this status with Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The city also hosts carnivals and fastivals all year roung. Among them are the San Juan fiestas, the Carnavales de Las Palmas, the International Film Festival, and the International Theater and Dance Festival.
