The second largest island of the group, Pico offers a landscape of dramatic contrasts. The Capitao, Caiado and Paul lakes are set within rugged moorland along the spine of the island, whilst a climb to the top of Mt Pico (the highest mountain in Portugal at 2351m) takes you through lava fields.

To the west of the island are the distinctive vineyards; mazes of black lava walls which have now been classed a world heritage site. The product of these vines is the famous ‘Verdelho’, a fortified wine excellent as an aperitif.

Pico also has a long association with whaling evident from the 2 whaling museums on the island and also the operators arranging exciting trips out to see the whales.

Attractions in Pico

There is a wealth of things to see on Pico; the vineyards, the wine cooperatives, the whaling museums, the lakes, the coastal lava formations, cheese factories and lots more.

Activities in Pico

Most people visiting Pico will go out whale and dolphin watching at least once but the cycling is excellent too due to the quiet lanes and not forgetting the spectacular ascent (by foot) of Mt Pico

Relaxing

Try a liqueur at the Cachorro lava formations on the North coast.

Getting Around

There are direct flights once a week from Lisbon but most people fly into Faial and then take the ferry across to Pico (30 mins). Once on the island, you are best to either hire a car or use taxis which are very reasonable

Pico is a calm, serene island to spend a holiday. There are great privately owned places to stay. Visit my site if you'd like to see one of those little pieces of heaven on earth. Look for my property - Quinta do Milhafre - on www.quinta-milhafre.com
